MATTHEW WHITTET’S ‘GIRL ASLEEP’ @ BELVOIR STREET

Greta Driscoll  (played by Ellen Steele) is about to turn fifteen in 1970s Australian suburbia, and without any consultation, her controlling parents have organised for the entire school to attend her fifteenth birthday party. Greta falls asleep in her bedroom, and we experience her vivid dreams, as a magnificent costumed fantasy with spellbinding visuals.

This is an interesting Australian take on teenage peer-group pressure, taunting and bullying. Greta’s journey is unsettling yet optimistic.

This stage production is far superior to the movie adaptation which screened in cinemas in August  and which will soon  be seen on our television  screens on the ABC.

Masterfully directed and beautifully costumed with an amazing soundscape of 1970s music, this humorous, playful production is a delightful theatrical experience for both teenagers and adults. Recommended.

GIRL ASLEEP is  playing upstairs at Belvoir Street until 24th December.
