WICKED presented by MIRANDA MUSICAL SOCIETY @ SUTHERLAND ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE

WICKED is a musical prequel to The Wizard Of Oz. The clever storyline covers the years before Dorothy’s arrival in the wonderful Land Of Oz. We experience the unlikely but profound friendship, and the extraordinary adventures of a quite misunderstood green girl named Elphaba (Emma Taviani), and the blonde and very popular Galinda/Glinda (Misha Williamson).

We follow their fateful journey, that leads them to both fulfill their destinies, one to become the “Wicked Witch of the West” and the other will become “Glinda The Good Witch”.

The citizens of The Land Of Oz are celebrating the death of the Wicked Witch, when Glinda appears. The musical continues as an extended flashback of the lives of these two women, from the moment they first meet as sorcery students at Shiz University.

One friend will remain unchanged, and the other will be quickly seduced by the power of magic. Elphaba journeys to the Emerald City to meet The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz (Garth Saville).

WICKED is a moral tale, with the premise that good will conquer evil, and delivers the essential message “to never judge others on their appearance”. The narrative is also about forgiveness, and provides an acknowledgement that everyone make mistakes. Very apt in this changing world of trump fanaticism, terrorism and extremism. Every audience will be contemplating, exactly what it like to be really wicked.

Gloriously funny and touching, this remarkable and impressively prodigious production has been lovingly and lavishly directed, with a skillful, deft touch by the director, Tim Dennis. A wonderful range of voice talents have been expertly cast, to ensure that each voice is perfect for each role.

MIRANDA MUSICAL SOCIETY have outdone themselves in this splendid revival version. Special mention goes to the creative team that created the  impressively successful and absolutely stunning lighting design that included thirty moving spots, together with the dazzling projection animation effects.

The multitude of memorable costumes, were glittering, imaginative and effective, and most especially the elaborate monkey costume design was magnificent. This production has thirty-three principal cast, and are supported by a huge ensemble cast of forty-two talented female and male actors, dancers and singers.

Hidden away from view, in the upstairs foyer, and amplified into the auditorium speaker system, the huge live orchestra were bright and brilliant, showcasing the heavily thematic musical score and well-remembered lyrics, including “Popular” and “Defying Gravity”.

There are many superb duet songs for Elphaba and Galinda/Glinda, with lyrics that showcase the very strange colourful and very dark magical Land of Oz. Many songs provide a beautiful upbeat blend of lighthearted quirky fun, with defiant, loathing-laden, tear-jerking lyrics, easily capturing hope, irony and loss.

Music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holman, book by Winnie Holzman, and based on the novel by Gregory Maguire “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.” Recommended. WICKED is playing at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre from 22 March 2017 until 26th March 2017. The running time of WICKED is just under three hours, including the one interval.
