Who Am I- No System is Safe

German Film Festival-inset
The computer hacking protagonist Benjamin played by Tom Schilling

This year’s Audi Festival of German Films- the 14th annual Festival- is fast approaching and the Festival will again showcase some of the boldest, most interesting films being made by contemporary German filmmakers.

This year’s Media preview featured Baran bo Odar’s new film WHO AM I- NO SUBJECT IS SAFE and this is a very out there, fast paced and sophisticated cyber thriller.

Tom Schilling plays the protagonist Benjamin, a rather listless, directionless young man whose main talent in life is that he is good at computers and, in particular, hacking into them.

He joins a computer hacking gang called that call themselves CLAY and they do a lot of subversive stuff including hacking into political parties databases and intelligence agencies.

They garner quite a reputation. It’s when the group tries to reach the top of the computer hacking groups and bump off their main competitor, a weird sounding group called MR X, that things get way out of control and Benjamin and his merry band of hackers find themselves in all sorts of trouble….

With his new film Baran Bo Odar gives cinemagoers one helluva ride.  He takes us deep into the world of cyber-hacking, there’s plenty of tension, and lots of twists and turns before  we come to the journey’s end.  Production values are very strong, with great cinematography and very sharp editing on display.

If Bo Odar’s film is anything to go then this year’s Festival should be well worth visiting. The Festival will launch with a gala opening night on the 13th May at Palace’s Norton Street cinema with the premiere of Dominik Graf’s new film BELOVED SISTERS, and will screen over two weeks at both the Norton Street and Chauvel cinemas.
