UTS BACKSTAGE PRESENTS ‘AND THEN THERE WERE NONE’ @ BON MARCHE STUDIO

UTS Backstage is back for its final show of the year, and coinciding with Agathie Christe’s 125th anniversary the Company has chosen one of Christie’s most popular stage adaptations, AND THEN THERE WERE NONE.

This Christie play follows ten seemingly unrelated people, who are lured to the isolated ‘Soldier Island’ for separate reasons, none of who are aware of their mysterious host’s deadly intentions. They soon begin to drop dead, one by one, as they discover that all of them have been previously implicit in the death(s) of other human beings and are now atoning for their sins.

Trapped on the island by a storm and with the killer among them, the guests must cautiously work together to discover the killer’s identity, the only question is… WHO?

Producer Vivian Lin explains the choice, “This is a murder mystery that keeps you guessing and has distinctly different and interesting characters. Murder mysteries are especially difficult to succeed in theatre, but once the actors make you suspend disbelief, it’s much easier to dive into the murder-mystery element of the plot”.

Baxter Atkins is excited to be directing the piece, “This play offered me something that so many other plays did not; the chance for me to stage a production jam packed with murders, deception and violence mixed with the quick 1940’s wit, vintage fashion and bottled drama.”

Atkins goes on to describe her directorial approach, “This production takes a visceral approach to the script. Rather than try to modernise or change it, we have embraced the script for the fun that it really is. The 1940’s were the heyday of murder mysteries, dinner parties, cultural tensions, class structures, heavy drinking and stories of maniacal murderers. This play is in many ways a throw back to that era, to what theatre used to be. The show delights in taunting the audiences’ suspicions – every time you think you know who the killer is, something new happens. It’s murder mystery at its most inspired.”

AND THEN THERE WERE NONE opens tonight at the Bon Marche studio, University of Technology, Level One, Building 3, 755 Harris Street, Broadway.  The show is playing nightly till Saturday evening with curtain up at 7pm. Some nights have already sold out. Bookings- https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/uts-backstage-presents-and-then-there-were-none-tickets-19468710437
