TROILUS AND CRESSIDA @ THE DEPOT THEATRE Marrickville

TROILUS AND CRESSIDA is one of Shakespeare’s problem plays, director Sean O’Riordan and his impressive huge cast of nineteen have brilliantly modified the play to repair the problems, to make this fast-paced version of TROILUS AND CRESSIDA the most entertaining night of Shakespeare that you will see this year. Following the plot-line of the Iliad, be prepared to absorb the ancient-history, legendary love story that is the Trojan War, with the all-consuming violent chaos that is love and war. Troilus and Cressida are deeply in love, but their love is torn apart.

Set in the seventh stalemated year of the Trojan war, the Greeks are still besieging Troy to rescue their beloved Helen. The Trojans are debating, trying to decide if it is now time to return Helen to the Greeks, meanwhile the Greeks are quarrelling amongst themselves. This rarely performed Shakespeare tragedy is delightfully easy to understand, and as all scenes share the same clever minimalist set, the costumes clearly define who are Greeks and who are Trojans.

The perfect music choices, and the accompaning sounds of trumpets and fury, plus the immaculate lighting design cue by cue, seamlessly compliments the many moods required for each scene. Impressed by the ultimate professionalism of the entire cast, actors at the ultimate pinnacle of their art and just perfectly blocked because everyone hits their marks, especially difficult because this set has no visible marks on the stage floor. Highly recommended.
