THE BLANK CANVAS PODCAST EPISODE 14 NICK BOSHIER

The podcast from prolific director & producer Lee Rogers – chatting with the trail blazers, artists, thought leaders, athletes, entrepreneurs and creators – stellar individuals who inspire us to live large.

This week’s guest is content creator, comedian and actor – Nick Boshier.

As the phrase goes, the cream rises to the top. In the early days of youtube, while every ad agency and creative wannabe on the planet was busy trying to crack the formula for ‘viral videos’.  Nick was busy creating dozens of no-budget viral videos as a side hustle, while working his day job in artist management.
Beached Az, Trent From Punchy were Nick’s first youtube hits, then once he hooked up with Christiaan Van Vuuren, the two ‘Bondi Hipsters’ went on a creative tear, ultimately converting dozens of viral hits into their own comedy TV series SOUL MATES (ABC TV) and the Emmy winning #7DaysLater (ABC TV), which was co-created by Nick.

2020 has seen Boshier star in Retrograde, a pandemic inspired ABC comedy about the new parameters of life, all from the safety of their very own virtual bar.

Ludo Studios is development with ABC and Comedy Central, for their animated comedy series Doodles, with Nick set to produce. Doodles is a multi-platform and interactive animated comedy series that takes real people’s drawings via social media and turns them into hilarious animated micro-movies featuring a cast of coloured-in characters.

And next up the Stan Original Special from the Bondi Hipsters, sees aspiring USBJ’s Dom and Adrian battling the woes of 2020. Locked down for the global pandemic, initially the two best friends see this as an opportunity to refocus. But as time goes on, it’s not their creativity and entrepreneurial-ship that is tested, so much as their friendship and sanity.

NICK ON HOW CREATING CONTENT AND COMEDY IN 2020 HAS CHANGED SINCE HIS ‘TRENT FROM PUNCHY’ YOUTUBE VIRAL VIDEO:

“It is a very different time. We were able to release anything up online.

Trent’s not a particularly woke individual obviously, he says some cooked shit. I wonder if that character would cut through or would even get seen at this point in time, not only because there’s a trillion other phenomenal content creators, but also the censorship thing.

Like, he’s (Trent) a baked individual, says anything at any time. And I think the culture at the moment, as optimistic as I am, you know, life always wins, but I think there’s such censorship, that it’s like, even if a character says something from the viewpoint of that character, which is infinite obviously and you want to get those expressions, he gets kind of judged in the same manner that an individual does who has an opinion on something, so it’s a kind of a funny time to that end. Because I’m often in writer’s rooms and often in certain creative processes and I try and stay a bit piratey and a bit loose, but yeah, it does feel like even characters are getting censored.” NICK BOSHIER

“Nick is one of the most original creative talents working in Australia right now. More than a little bent and excels in the comedy space, but I reckon the best is yet to come as he is tapped for more dramatic film and television roles.” LEE ROGERS

“2020 has had its way with us all and is pushing us beyond our comfort zones, I’m hoping these conversations will inspire people to keep punching and keep creating in their lives”, says Lee.
