Belvoir is pleased to announce the productions making up the first part of their 2021 season. In recognition of the unpredictable times at hand, the first  announcement reveals the shows that will take to the stage from February to September  2021, with the second announcement to be shared in early 2021. 

Comprising of four brand new shows and the welcome return of two ‘all-time best’ shows,  Belvoir’s 2021 season continues to celebrate outstanding established and emerging voices and great Australian storytelling, as we all optimistically turn to a new kind of normal. 



Back after an overwhelming sell-out debut season is thrilling new musical Fangirls. Written by the superb young talent, Yve Blake, the fun is bolstered by a vibrant and eclectic cast who perfectly embody the frenzy of the digital spaces young fangirls inhabit. It returns as an award-winning show, as Winner of Best Production of a Mainstage Musical at the Sydney  Theatre Awards and Best Musical or Cabaret at the Queensland Matilda Awards.

The premiere of a new play from Walkley Award-winning ABC foreign correspondent Sally  Sara. A fictional drama that asks how we get back to ‘normal’ life after being ripped away from it, Stop Girl is a ratbaggy, wise play told through the unerring eye of one of the country’s great journos.

Back by popular demand, the magnetic Anita Hegh will reprise her role in this return season of 2020’s production A Room of One’s Own. Rippling with passion, Virginia Woolf’s A Room of  One’s Own is arguably one of the finest pieces of writing in the last hundred years. Woolf’s essay has been painstakingly adapted by Carissa Licciardello and Tom Wright, and stars Anita  Hegh and Ella Prince.

It’s an uncertain time. Change is coming, you can sniff it in the air. Chekhov’s great, last play needs no embellishment to describe our times. A brand-new comedy from the writer of the nationwide smash hit Single Asian Female.  Michelle Law’s (SBS’s Homecoming Queens) Miss Peony is a glitzy, glamorous and slightly unhinged comedy about a Chinese-Australian beauty pageant, the competitive advice of a  ghostly grandmother and being caught between two generations and two cultures.

A brilliant new play from a brilliant Palawa voice, Nathan Maynard, the 2019 Balnaves Fellow.  A robust, clear-eyed story set in Tasmania, now – Dan’s got enough on his plate between keeping a young family together and his responsibilities to land and people. But every year  more and more folk are claiming to be Palawa too. Folk no-one’s heard of until now, who haven’t been ‘round before. Are they legit? Or are they ‘tick-a-box’? Who decides? And how?  A trip for old mob and new back into a knotty past.

Up Late with Belvoir and Moonshine & Tits Productions are pleased to present the premiere of ‘44 Sex Acts in One Week’, an apocalyptic rom-com created in extraordinary times. Premiering from 16 – 20 December at Belvoir  St Theatre, the play is part gig, part radio-play and part stab in the dark, in a subversive and  joyful response to the madness that was 2020.  

Bringing together two of Australia’s most loved comediennes, Green Room Award-winner Rebecca Massey  (ABC’s Utopia) and Sydney Theatre Award-winner Sheridan Harbridge (Griffin Theatre Company’s Prima Facie),  the comedic duo star alongside a cast of some of the country’s finest theatre talent including Keith Robinson  (Belvoir’s Twelfth Night), Priscilla Doueihy (IFC Films’ Babyteeth) and Michael Whalley (Belvoir’s Hir). 

Clickbait blogger Celina Valderrama has just been given the assignment from hell: do and review every item in a  new book entitled ‘ 44 Sex Acts That Will Change Your Life’ by Friday. With no other partner available, Celina  is forced to turn to her nemesis, the holier than thou eco-activist and office mail boy, Alab Delusa.  As the  unwilling couple embark on a race against time through the world of kink, will the friction between them unleash  the wild we’re all trying to keep at bay? ACTORS BENEVOLENT FUND’S most popular fundraiser event – the INDOOR PICNIC AND CABARET is back.  This year marks 75 years that The Actors Benevolent Fund has provided assistance to performing arts professionals in times of need.

This fabulous event will be held on Sunday 18 August in the Joan Sutherland Rehearsal Room of Opera Australia.   Award winning director Luke Joslin, and legendary Musical Director Michael Tyack have brought together Sydney’s best-known performers for this glittering industry event including:-

Nancye Hayes, Jonathan Biggins, Chloe Dallimore, Paul Capsis, Sheridan Harbridge, Sandy Gore, Maggie Blinco, Natalie Abbott, James Hadwin, Scott Irwin, Margi de Ferranti, Olivia Vasquez, Peter Cousens, Brittanie Shipway, Dan Belle, Wayne Scott Kermond, Garry Scale, Robert McDougall, Daniel Belle, Jay Laga’aia, Courtney Bell, Meredith O’Reilly, Siobhan Clifford, Laura Murphy, Stephanie Caccamo, Heather Mitchell and many more. 

ACTORS BENEVOLENT FUND is the entertainment industry’s charity that provides help when it’s needed most. Founded in 1944 to assist the many members of the acting profession who were caught up in the devastation that World War II. It was recognised that action was required to look after the families of lost servicemen and women. It is in this spirit that the Actors Benevolent Fund has continued for 75 years, in supporting professional members of the performing arts community across theatre, film and television.

The Actors Benevolent Fund also umbrellas the STA Fund which was established with the Sydney Theatre Awards to assist members of the theatre community suffering from mental health issues. It also administers the Victoria Longley Cancer Appeal which offers financial assistance to help with the costs of cancer treatment. Donations to these funds and the Actors Benevolent Fund can be made on the ABF website.

BLUEBERRY PLAY is a short run, late night offering at the Old Fitz Theatre and well worth the effort it might take to get there at 10pm or the special time of 7pm on Sunday.  It offers a sweet story crafted with a lovely sense of fun by playwright Ang Collins, directed with a similar odd amusement by Sheridan Harbridge and performed with wide eyed comic excellence by solo performer Julia Robertson.

But there’s more going on in this second person, direct to audience, relation of events in an adolescent life than just the humour that’s squeezed into its compact 60 minutes… it’s bursting with the tartness of  themes around child carers, adolescent sex, mental health, the power of female friendships in adversity and the inequities of class.

The girl is on her way to a party.  There’s a private school boy she likes and she is dressed as a blueberry for the occasion.  Her logic is sound about this choice and she seems confident in her shy and slightly cynical way.  She’s got a bit else on her mind beside the nicely proportioned Johnno though.  Dad isn’t well on a whole heap of fronts, Dave the old, fat Lab is coming to the end, Mum is harassed and coming to the end of her empathy tether.  Add in a chili sauce issue and there’s a tussle going on inside the rotund velveteen fruit. Even at this advanced age and after a lifetime immersed in performing arts, it never ceases to amaze what live theatre can do.  Brilliant productions soothe that intellectual itch for stories, fetching complex characters to populate a richly defined place such that you lean forward in your seat and crane your head across the wide stage to make sure you don’t miss anything.  And then a detail hits you square on to draw the breath.  For me, last night at THE SUGAR HOUSE playing at Belvoir, it was Nana’s brooch.  Unbidden tears of recognition foregrounding the  recognition of investment, only the live can do that! BLUEBERRY, by emerging playwright Ang Collins, is playing as part of the BATCH FESTIVAL at Griffin Theatre Company and it is such a healthy treat of show.  Sweet, compact, neatly packaged and with the tartness of unspoken sadness when you burst the skin.  Played with stellar technique and compassion and directed with style, BLUEBERRY is a moorish delicacy. Anyone who says they are not slightly transfixed by gladiator style sport is lying. With this in mind, MC Reuben Kaye offered us a handful of talented international cabaret and burlesque stars in back to back battle.

The result was a string of live and uncensored ‘battle rounds’ from true entertainers which made that recent reality TV phenomenon look like a preschool craft class.

Slick traditional burlesque from Vespa White morphed into queer, confronting and ultimately very funny burlesque work from Betty Grumble and Aaron Manhattan.

Standout vocal visitor for the night was Natalie Gamsu, who rocketed from the stage and beyond with her riveting version of Bowie’s Space Oddity. She was ably supported by the smooth JC Thomas Band, whose loungy list of originals and clever covers linked the night’s less relaxed moments together.

The comic cabaret of Sheridan Harbridge gave me the most pleasure I have had from a voice and ukelele act for some time. She was a subtle superpower on the side of the cabaret artists. Speaking of superpowers, Reuben Kaye was a formidable force as the MC. His smile and style just became more glamorous through his performances which featured quick adult one liners, self-deprecating quips and plenty of local jokes.

His fabulous voice in a tender rendering of Men At Work’s Land Down Under was a patriotic tribute. The venue resounded with applause and the weeping of punters nostalgic for gap year backpacking days.

The Ring was a tantalizing taste of many cabaret and burlesque possibilities. It was festival-worthy and shocked many of us out of our working-week rut.
