BELVOIR ANNOUNCES PART ONE OF SEASON 2021

Belvoir is pleased to announce the productions making up the first part of their 2021 season. In recognition of the unpredictable times at hand, the first  announcement reveals the shows that will take to the stage from February to September  2021, with the second announcement to be shared in early 2021. 

Comprising of four brand new shows and the welcome return of two ‘all-time best’ shows,  Belvoir’s 2021 season continues to celebrate outstanding established and emerging voices and great Australian storytelling, as we all optimistically turn to a new kind of normal. 

BELVOIR’S 2021 SEASON – PART ONE 

FANGIRLS: SAT 30 JAN – SAT 20 FEB, AT THE SEYMOUR CENTRE 

Back after an overwhelming sell-out debut season is thrilling new musical Fangirls. Written by the superb young talent, Yve Blake, the fun is bolstered by a vibrant and eclectic cast who perfectly embody the frenzy of the digital spaces young fangirls inhabit. It returns as an award-winning show, as Winner of Best Production of a Mainstage Musical at the Sydney  Theatre Awards and Best Musical or Cabaret at the Queensland Matilda Awards.

STOP GIRL: 20 MARCH – 25 APRIL  

The premiere of a new play from Walkley Award-winning ABC foreign correspondent Sally  Sara. A fictional drama that asks how we get back to ‘normal’ life after being ripped away from it, Stop Girl is a ratbaggy, wise play told through the unerring eye of one of the country’s great journos.

A ROOM OF ONE’S OWN: 6 MAY – 23 MAY 

Back by popular demand, the magnetic Anita Hegh will reprise her role in this return season of 2020’s production A Room of One’s Own. Rippling with passion, Virginia Woolf’s A Room of  One’s Own is arguably one of the finest pieces of writing in the last hundred years. Woolf’s essay has been painstakingly adapted by Carissa Licciardello and Tom Wright, and stars Anita  Hegh and Ella Prince.

THE CHERRY ORCHARD: 29 MAY – 27 JUNE 

It’s an uncertain time. Change is coming, you can sniff it in the air. Chekhov’s great, last play needs no embellishment to describe our times. A richly talented cast from today’s Australia,  including Pamela Rabe and Keith Robinson, in a classic as funny as it is profound. This promises to be one of the highlights of 2021.

MISS PEONY: 3 JULY – 1 AUGUST 

A brand-new comedy from the writer of the nationwide smash hit Single Asian Female.  Michelle Law’s (SBS’s Homecoming Queens) Miss Peony is a glitzy, glamorous and slightly unhinged comedy about a Chinese-Australian beauty pageant, the competitive advice of a  ghostly grandmother and being caught between two generations and two cultures.

AT WHAT COST?: 7 AUGUST – 5 SEPTEMBER  

A brilliant new play from a brilliant Palawa voice, Nathan Maynard, the 2019 Balnaves Fellow.  A robust, clear-eyed story set in Tasmania, now – Dan’s got enough on his plate between keeping a young family together and his responsibilities to land and people. But every year  more and more folk are claiming to be Palawa too. Folk no-one’s heard of until now, who haven’t been ‘round before. Are they legit? Or are they ‘tick-a-box’? Who decides? And how?  A trip for old mob and new back into a knotty past.

It’s particularly rocked our community of artists. But we’re responding to some pretty massive challenges the way a  theatre should – on our stage. We’re packing all the energy of the moment into Part one – some reminders of what we’ve always done well, and some bold, contemporary voices too.  Onwards!” 

HOW TO RULE THE WORLD @ THE DRAMA THEATRE

In Nakkiah Lui’s play HOW TO RULE THE WORLD Vic, Zaza and Chris meet in a bar. They have a passionate, booze filled chat that is the genesis for them to start an election campaign.

They are fed up with the current state of politics and the Prime Ministers current push to push Sovereign State legislation through  Parliament.

All three of them are well educated, savvy with political processes, and have their own ideas about how they want things run.  There is a a half senate election coming up  They come up with a plan. They will  find someone who will run for the senate and get him or her  to be the voice for their views.

They decide that it will have to be a non threatening, non thinking white person.  Further, they decide its going to have to be an out of work actor, and that they will need to hold auditions to find the right person.                         Continue reading HOW TO RULE THE WORLD @ THE DRAMA THEATRE

SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY LAUNCHES ITS 2017 SEASON WITH SOME SURPRISES

It has been the season for launches and Sydney’s flagship theatre company, the Sydney Theatre Company,  has now chimed in with the announcement of its 2017 season.

Sydney Theatre Company’s Executive Director Patrick McIntyre started proceedings and then handed over to interim Artistic Director Kip Williams announced next years’ program to a packed gathering at the Bar at the End of the Wharf on Thursday night.

Williams has  curated  an intriguing program which is bound to attract a healthy cross-section of theatregoers. There are some exciting and bold choices.

There have not been enough stories coming from our Asian communities that have made it our stages. This makes the STC’s decision to program Disapol Savetsila’s play AUSTRALIAN GRAFFITI  cause for much celebration as indeed was witnessed by the delighted reactions of Lee Lin Chin and her friends when Williams made the announcement.

The  Sydney Theatre Company developed Savetsila’s play in conjunction with Asian Australian arts company Performance 4a and Playwriting Australia and will be directed by Paige Rattray. The play, commissioned by the STC, has been described as exploring ‘the migrant experience from the inside out.” A Thai family who open up a Thai restaurant in a small country town face a  crisis when their place of business is vandalised by graffiti. How cam they survive such a personal and cultural insult?!

Internationally acclaimed filmmaker PJ Hogan, along with his wife Jocelyn Moorehouse were on hand to hear the announcement that Hogan’s breakthrough film is coming back as a stage play, what’s more a musical.  Hogan has come up with a new book for the musical  and brings Muriel and her friends up to the present day. Simon Phillips will direct  and the music and lyrics come via award winning singer-songwriters Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall.

Williams will direct three productions during the year including a Caryl Churchill play CLOUD NINE which will star one of our finest young actors, Harry Greenwood. A big fan of Churchill’s work, Williams believes audiences will engage deeply with this work which explores how our need as human beings need to give ourselves specific  identities limits our ability to achieve true authenticity.

There will be a fresh revival of Michael Gow’s classic AWAY, directed by brilliant young director Matthew Lutton and starring Heather Mitchell, and a new adaptation by Andrew Upton  of Anton Chekhov’s masterpiece THREE SISTERS, again directed by Williams, starring one of Australia’s brightest young actresses, Eryn Jean Norvill.

The years’ international production  will be the Headlong, Nottingham Playhouse and Almeida Theatre production of George Orwell’s classic novel 1984 with a stage adaptation by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan. Sydney audiences will see the original production as directed by Icke and Macmillan but with a new Australian cast.

At the gathering Williams also announced that Imara Savage has been appointed as the STC’s new Resident Director taking over from Sarah Goodes who has moved across to the Melbourne Theatre Company. Savage will direct two plays in 2017, Colm Toibin’s THE TESTAMENT OF MARY starring Alison Whyte and Moira Bufini’s DINNER with a cast including Bruce Spence and Brandon Burke.
