BLACKTOWN THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS INTO THE WOODS @ THE JOAN, PENRITH

ITW - Print-16

Inviting a reviewer to a preview is tricky. Anyone following the London Hamlet furore knows how horribly wrong it can go. People are exhausted, voices are tired, musicians are sore and techies are the walking dead. Writing a review about a preview is even trickier. What will naturally go wrong needs to be separated from what is endemically wrong?

And I hope I’m not wrong about this because I am about to write a glowing endorsement of Blacktown Theatre Company’s INTO THE WOODS at the Joan. I’m leaving out the plethora of things that the cast and crew are tweaking and adjusting and finishing off over the next 24 hours because the only thing a review reader needs to know is that this exuberant, colourful production is rich in concept and execution. I loved it warts and all. Continue reading BLACKTOWN THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS INTO THE WOODS @ THE JOAN, PENRITH

‘Once upon a time’ … Stephen Sondheim’s treasured music theatre favourite INTO THE WOODS (Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Book by James Lapine, originally directed on Broadway by James Lapine) delivers its take on precisely all that happens after ‘Happily Ever After’ and yes indeed ‘the truth hurts’.

A modern politically corrected twist is applied to well-known classic fairy-tales, with a terrific cast of great voices who each evoke exactly the right mood during their performances. The original fairy tale of a childless baker and his wife who had been cursed by a witch, has been combined with the Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel fairy tales.          Continue reading NUTS PRESENTS INTO THE WOODS @ LEND LEASE THEATRE DARLING HARBOUR

This production is theatrically and impossibly brilliant and clever too, unlike the recent Disney movie version …

Once upon a time, there lay a small village at the edge of the woods, in a far off fairy tale kingdom. Full ensemble cast, a more traditional version of the twisted fairy tale that is INTO THE WOODS as created by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim, with this inspired vision by director Leonie Cambridge, assisted by Peter Meredith. No expense has been spared, and each character is fully costumed and instantly recognisable. Musical direction by Anthony Cutrupi, and carefully orchestrated choreography by Melissa Trickey.     Continue reading INTO THE WOODS @ The Zenith

Rockdale Musical Society with a very well chosen cast, is revisiting this Sondheim classic, for the first time since its production in 1994.

How far would you go, to make your wish come true? INTO THE WOODS challenges our perceptions of what makes a fairy tale, by taking many of those well-remembered classic fairy tale characters (Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, The Wolf, Jack and the Beanstalk and many more) and sends them all into the woods, all at the same time.
