SCARECROW is a terrific choice for presenting at the Sydney Fringe and for producing at Blood Moon Theatre. Written by prolific American playwright Don Nigro, it is textually designed to be bare, claustrophobic, with the focus on character and relationships. As directed by Naomi Livingstone and Deborah Jones, this offering is bespoke to the tiny stage and has a brilliant performance at its heart.
We meet Rose and her daughter Cally. Never going out and probably feigning her illness, Rose has always had Cally to herself in the tiny house on the edge of a cornfield but the daughter is ripe for manipulation and sexual predation. Enter Nick. Shadowy and experienced in influencing pliable, inexperienced, naive young women, his agenda apparently reaches beyond just sex with the eager Cally, past the field’s scarecrow into the house itself. It is most common stuck in traffic I think. Glancing across at someone car dancing and wondering what they are dancing to. They wiggle and head bang in a world of their own, caught up by the irresistibility of rhythm or the thump of bass. It leads me to wonder … what is beneath their choice to block out the world and have that tiny moment of pure self. SILENT DISCO, written by Sydney playwright Lachlan Philpott, playing at the New Theatre is like that. We see what they do, how they move in the world. JENNIFER FOREVER perfectly suits this great venue, and is an intense and thought-provoking exploration of the complexity of sins and of learned habits within two un-married lifestyles, with some emphasis on the man’s evil fixation on young women, and this despicable taboo that is bad and unforgivable.
Brilliantly executed piece of provocative new theatre (for mature audiences), tackles by gleeful confrontations between the Man and the Girl, what is unfortunately an all too common evil in our modern society, and whilst initially misleading, but in this surreal reality, everything is not quite what you are expecting.
