By special arrangement with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner, Critical Stages Touring will present a livestreamed reading of Homebody/Kabul, featuring Simon Burke and a stellar Australian cast this October.

Presented over two nights this rehearsed reading will be raising funds to support two charities providing life-saving community support and programs in Afghanistan – the NY/Kabul-based Women for Afghan Women and Australian-based Mahboba’s Promise.

The two 100-minute livestreams will be broadcast live on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd October at 7pm Sydney time, via our Facebook page and YouTube channel. Viewers will be asked to donate to each charity directly in lieu of buying ‘tickets’ to the event, which will not be recorded or stay on either platform after the performance.

Kushner’s Homebody/Kabul is the story of a lonely London housewife and the far-reaching effects of her fascination with Afghanistan, set off by an outdated guidebook. Set in 1998, and written before “September 11” and “Taliban” became part of our vocabulary, the story begins with a thrilling monologue from the Homebody, played by Caroline Brazier (Rake, Packed to the

Critical Stages Touring, Australia’s national touring theatre company, is thrilled to announce the launch of a new playwriting program in partnership with the UK’s Paines Plough Theatre Company.

Come to Where I Am – Australia will engage at least 7 regional and rural playwrights from around the country to create a new 10-minute story that is a snapshot of what it is like to live in their town right now. These stories will be turned into short video postcards featuring readings by the playwrights themselves. The readings and works will be showcased in a new digital screening room on our website, hosted on Paines Plough’s site and eventually make it to stages around the country.

Selection is by EOI process and submissions are open now until midnight, Friday 22nd May.

The project is one of a number of planned responses to the Covid-19 arts shutdown from Critical Stages Touring. CEO Chris Bendall is spearheading the project, based on Paines Plough’s exceptionally successful Come To Where I Am, which has produced over 160 stories since 2010.
