STALKER THE MUSICAL – Australian Premiere @ THE DEPOT THEATRE, MARRICKVILLE

This scintillating musical delivers an inspiring story of human survival and of finding true love in a dystopian world, is set in an alternative dark universe where everyone must always wear their gloves because physical contact, including touching is illegal. Stalking all your neighbours using high-powered binoculars is compulsory, and is the one and only entertainment outlet provided to the populace.

Whilst the existence of love is undiscovered, Jay Cloudstreet (Levi Burrows) finds himself falling into lust with just the one woman Ava Derwent (Emma Taviani), but lust is forbidden, love is forbidden. Stalking only one person is illegal and unusual in “the-town”, and Mrs Henrietta Pleasureberry (Michele Lansdown) will permanently send you to the farm for all prohibited behaviour. A mysterious stranger arrives, with plans to mould this dystopian world, into his own image.

Rapturously fantastic and totally entertaining musical, provides both comedy and drama as this disarming and unique story unfolds, now in its premiere season. Wonderful staging, with so much eclectic musicality, plus supreme artistry in the lyrics, a flawless musical gem. Each song deftly moves the story forward, and the ensemble pieces are delightful. Brilliant costume choices initially in shades of silver, grey and black, match the behaviour exhibited by each character. In the real world, costumes in every colour are used with great abandon.

STALKER THE MUSICAL was presented at the 2015 New York International Fringe Festival (FringeNYC), the Chicago Music Theatre festival and a workshop production at the Hayes Theatre. Music composed by Andy Peterson. Book and Lyrics by Alex Giles. David Russell – Original Concept, Book and Lyrics.

Not a cliché in sight, of course the title STALKER THE MUSICAL did not telegraph the plot. This brand new clever musical, that is so much more than a one-solitary-stalker, with its ensemble array of stalkers, stalkings, stalkerings, stalkerists.
