SKY BLUE MYTHIC : A MESMERIC SOLO PERFORMANCE BY ANGELA GOH

On the night the moon was slowly and deliberately obscured by the earth’s shadow Angela Goh’s slow and deliberate contortions, twists and steps were exploring the beautiful possibilities of dance and movement. The wonderful use of light in SKY BLUE MYTHIC had an otherworldly quality which again echoed the evening’s lunar eclipse. There was also a live musical component for much of the performance, as Corin Ileto performed her innovative and diverse soundscape.

The opening segment featured Angela taking measured and precise steps across the stage, bending and distorting her body against a brilliantly white floor and backdrop in absolute silence. The audience sat enraptured in metaphorical pin drop silence. It was an extraordinary response to a mesmerising scene.

Along with the movement, lighting, colour and sound of SKY BLUE MYTHIC there was an exploration of time. Scenes and movement were repeated, creating a looping environment and a search for new ways of being. The nature of time was further examined as Angela advanced the small sundial on stage releasing a torrent of music.

The lighting and colour was a major feature of the evening. From the stark white of the performance space to the subtle changes of illumination and tone and the vibrant reds, greens and electric blues it was a visceral experience. At times it was explosive and overwhelming, at other times calm and precise, drawing the audience into the minutiae of the dancer’s barely perceptible movements.

The choreographer and dancer was Angela Goh, composer and sound designer Corin Ileto and lighting designer Govin Ruben.

SKY BLUE MYTHIC opened at the Studio Theatre, Sydney Opera House on Wednesday 26th May and is playing until Saturday 29th May.
