Sing A Long A Sound Of Music @ The State Theatre

Sound Of Music-inset

For die hard fans of the classic movie you can’t go past SING A LONG A SOUND OF MUSIC where audience members get to release their inner, favourite Von Trapp family singer.

SING A LONG A SOUND OF MUSIC promised an evening of wholesome, nostalgic entertainment where everyone from children to senior citizens were given the chance to celebrate the popular, iconic musical’s 50th anniversary. This it certainly delivered with style and panache,

I had an absolute ball with my eighty year old companion, singing in unison with hundreds of  devotees, who were helped with the film having surtitles.

The host was Katrina Retallick, dressed as Maria in a dirndl. She kept the theatre crowd buzzing with excitement through the night.

The night started with a very inventive, creative and highly original costume parade that took place before the film started. Among the participants were,- men dancing in traditional hats, braces and Lederhosen, over forty nuns all genuflecting including a bearded nun and an actual nun, young Gretls aged six years old, people dressed as brown paper packages, deers, even hills and goats, a baroness in drag, people dressed as toxic berries, and runners dressed as ‘Fa’- a long, long way to run….

Katrina commented, “The only rule is to have fun” and this was clearly an understatement!

Each attendee was provided with a fun pack which included a card with a question mark for everyone to hold up when we heard, “How do you solve a problem like Maria?” There was a card with the word– Flibbertigibbet, a curtain swatch, Edelweiss flowers, an invitation to the Captain’s ball and a party popper for when the Captain and Maria finally kissed.

Reactions from the mixed audience were varied from laughing at Gretl’s cute comments, sighing, hissing the baroness, barking at Rolfe, booing the Nazis, cheering the Captain and Maria, clapping in time to the music and yodeling. The audience often preempted lines from the film and at times even yelled out their own remarks!

It was a great moment when, as we watched Maria and the Captain exchange vows on the screen, to see a beautiful woman, resplendent in wedding attire, walk down the centre aisle.

As well as strudels and noodles I can now say that SING A LONG A SOUND OF MUSIC is amongst my favourite things. The concert played at the State theatre, Market Street, Sydney on Friday 27th February and Saturday 28th February, 2015.
