Vermillion Art Gallery is hosting a solo exhibition, featuring paintings by contemporary Chinese-Australian artist Dapeng Liu. The exhibition, titled Shan Shui Australis, will be the Dapeng Liu’s first solo exhibition as a professional artist. The official opening of the exhibition will launch on the 9th of August.

Dapeng Liu is a Sydney-based artist who primarily works with oil paint on canvas. His works showcased in Vermilion Art’s Shan Shui Australis exhibition explore the dichotomy between the East and the West as well as the cyclical nature of time. For the most part, this exhibition will showcase paintings that are concerned with the environment and landscapes that influence the artist.

Born in Beijing in 1982, Dapeng Liu discovered his fascination with painting and drawing at age four, his father began to mentor him.

Since 2014 the artist has been concerned with his connection between the East and the West which is undeniably evident in his landscape paintings. In 2014, Dapeng was a highly commended finalist in the Archibald Prize for his painting Portrait of Yin Cao on Blue-and-Green Landscape.

In 2015 he was finalist for the Sulman Prize for his landscape painting The temple, the sailing boat and the trolleybus ‒ a surrealistic mountainscape, which explored the timelessness of the vast Chinese landscapes as well as the Australian land scape which has endured from time immemorial.

In 2011 the artist received a Masters of Arts from the University of Sydney. His research dissertation focused on pre-modern Buddhist art in China.

Since 2012, Dapeng has been a PhD candidate in the Department of Art History and Film Studies, where by his doctoral concentrates on Chinese modern art from the early 20th century.

Shan Shui Australis will be exhibited at Vermilion Art [Facebook]  [YouTube] from the 9th of August till the 8th of September. Vermilion Art opens from 11am to 7pm from Wednesday to Saturday.
