Comedy great, Les Dawson famously said “My wife is a sex object. Every time I ask for sex, she objects.”

SEX OBJECT is an absolute joy, gloriously funny, quite wonderful, and is a highly entertaining brand new Australian comedy. SEX OBJECT is exactly and precisely all about her one reason why their six month fully sexual relationship has now evaporated into “My girlfriend is a sex object. Every time her boyfriend asks her for sex . . . she objects.” Beautifully directed by Michael Abercromby, with an excellent cast of four superb actors, each with perfect comedy timing.

The play acknowledges the crisis that millennials are the frigid generation, because they are completely addicted to pornography, and that obsession with pornography is a relationship killer. Playwright Charlie Falkner has crafted 87 minutes of delicious comedy dialogue, about posturing millennials and their phones and their porno. A completely unexpected plot twist, was provided at just the right moment. However the quite superb twist at the end, makes this play very memorable. Constant laughter from the opening night audience, as many of the comedy one-liners were worded specifically for the millennial demographic (Generation Y). There also was an ample supply of comedy one-liners worded specifically for non-millennials.

Robert Stick (deceased) was a performance artist producing sexualised statues/images and sexualised installations. and became famous by masterminding “the orgy on the Sydney Harbour Bridge”. His two children, narcissist Gus (Gustav) overshadows and controls his spiritually-inclined sister Ron (Veronica), and both are alternative performance artists, and have decided to honour their famous father’s legacy, by converting their childhood home into a performance museum devoted to truth. To fund their expensive artistic lifestyles, Gustav (Andrew Hearle) works “in tech” and Veronica (Charlotte Devenport) excels as a bookseller working in Newtown at Elizabeth’s Bookshop.

Endearing over the top characters highlight the artistic lifestyle, narcissist Gus is insanely manic, and he is engaged to be married to Kate, who with each instantaneous mood change, easily reflecting her constantly fluid vocation, expertly provides a dozen completely different superficial personalities (reminded of the movie SYBIL).  Ron’s often crying boyfriend Ben (Charlie Falkner) initially with “unfinished business”, with his over-reliance on being permanently connected to social media via free wi-fi, is a pathetically inadequate emotional wreck, around which the thought-provoking comedy narrative unfolds, with many unexpected outcomes. Stage Manager, Madeleine McWilliam provides the important female voice-over of Lou, the often heard, but always unseen.

Each brand new independent Australian play at the Depot Theatre, provides a live theatre experience, that is unique and adventurous. SEX OBJECT is a thoroughly entertaining theatre night out, from 19 April to 29 April 2017.
