Schapelle Schapelle the Musical @ MANNING BAR University Of Sydney

Stunning high-energy and immensely entertaining, musical comedy parody of “The Schapelle Corby Story”. With superb cast book music and lyrics, providing cleverly fictionalized media sensationalism, insightfully delivered by a full cast of triple threat actors with perfect comic timing. Witty sarcastic and a bloody amazing night out.

Every Australian remembers her marijuana smuggling into Bali, her complete inability to provide believable innocence, the Death Penalty for her drug charges, the media frenzy about Schapelle Corby and her Queensland bogan family, the unscrupulous Indonesian trial system, and the lawyers that controlled the media access that ultimately caused her to receive the twenty-year jail sentence.

Kelsi Boyden immediately embodies all that is the bogan Schapelle Corby, all singing, all dancing, all lying, and she constantly provides outstanding presence and believability in the role of the bogan Schapelle Corby.

On stage is the five piece band, setup behind the illuminated “great wall of empty XXXX Gold beer cans”, performing with great panache, the ever-changing musical landscape. Highly memorable, very imaginative fast-paced choreography, with never ending enthusiasm.

The gift of multiple roles for most of the actors, every new character is played with deliberate abandon, and always highlighted by a complete lack of gravitas. Starting from 2005, everything about Bali drug smuggler Schapelle Corby and her family, together with the machinations of the news reporters/anchors employed by Australian Television Channel 19. Highly recommended.

Duration 135 minutes, including the fifteen minute interval.
