ROUGH HEWN presents MORNING SACRIFICE at STAR OF THE SEA at MANLY

Australian author and playwright, Dymphna Cusak wrote MORNING SACRIFICE, her female concentric play in 1942. All of its many concerns, do remain very very relevant today. Entertaining theatre drama that asks a question about the human condition. There are fundamental benefits in always recommending and applying an “abundance of caution” when reacting to vastly differing moral perspectives, especially whilst having no understanding of all possible consequences.

Dymphna Cusack decided to write her second play about the place of young girls in the society of the time, whilst cleverly detailing her dissatisfaction from job-related experiences whilst a teacher in the New South Wales school system from the 1920s to the 1940s. Written whilst teaching at Sydney Girl’s High School.

Entirely set in the fictional staff room of an all girls high school in Sydney, called Easthaven Girls’ High School. The era is just before World War Two. Nine women teachers negotiate each school day, and reveal the loveless, the unwanted, controlling and bullying behaviours, rivalry, unhappiness, bitterness, jealousy, contemptuous ridicule and unwarranted gossip, and the urgent need for female teachers to change the status quo. So much has not changed.

Premiered in Perth WA, at the Repertory Theatre in 1942.
