Q THEATRE’S TALKS AND IDEAS : THE INTERNET : WILL YOU MARRY ME ALEXA?

In 2017, Amazon’s Alexa received (and rejected) over 1,000,000 marriage proposals. By 2018, there were more than 300,000 active bots on Facebook Messenger with 8 billion messages being exchanged every month.

With the explosion of conversational assistants, automated check outs and ancestry.com, how close is too close when it comes to our digital doubles? Will You Marry Me Alexa? is a live panel discussion exploring technology, identity and the space in between.

It’s the next instalment in the Q Theatre’s Talks & Ideas series, (inspired by the Sydney Opera House’s series),  of FREE events that take on big questions with a healthy dose of humour and a chance to hear from leading artists, thinkers, scientists, agitators and local heroes. Wrapped up as a tight 60-minute experience each Talks & Ideas event includes a keynote introduction, a panel discussion and a chance to ask questions.

The Keynote Speaker this month is Linda Marsden, a doctoral candidate at the Young and Resilient Research Centre at Western Sydney University, who is currently investigating young people’s health and identity through the lens of selfies and associated social media practices.

Panellists include:

  • Leanne Tobin (Dharug Artist and Playwright)
  • Emele Uguvale (Tokelaun Fijian multi-disciplinary storyteller and Creative Director of talanoa.com.au)
  • Brett Farrell (Emu Plains based lawyer with expertise in digital security and privacy.
