A book of positive nurturing for the self; ‘A Letter to My 10-Year-Old Self’ is a collection of letters written by adults that navigated pain and adversity
During 2020, 25 people in this newly released anthology took on the task of reflecting on their lives as they were at the age of ten. They considered what had already come to pass and what was yet to come. Each author has written a letter of encouragement to their 10-year old self. The stories that unfolded in the writing are tainted with the grief of loss, earth-shattering illnesses, feelings of abandonment and true bravery in the face of adversity.
Kati Britton’s story is about ‘The Oath’ she made to herself at the age of 10.
“My letter is an honest and true insight into the curveballs that life happens to throw at you, at the least expected times in life” she said.
Kati Britton wrote her letter with awe-inspiring compassion for herself. There’s no self-pity, instead, she gives to her 10-year-old self the voice, the validation, and the positivity necessary for healing.
‘A Letter To My 10-Year-Old Self’, published by Change Empire Books, touches on stories of ordinary people who have overcome extraordinary life events.
Publisher Cathryn Mora said,”Grief, loss, and pain permeate the lives of us all. Some have endured more than others. Collating and publishing a collection of reflections by real people (ie. people who, for the most part, weren’t already authors) who’ve not only survived trauma, tragedy, and adversity but thrived on the other side was a pleasure”, she said.
For many of the writers it was the first time they had ‘convened’ with themselves. Adults have insights that a 10-year-old simply doesn’t have, as yet.
The 10-year-old has developed the full range of emotions but not the cognitive abilities to categorise pain in order to process it. This is why a child is more easily overwhelmed by traumatic experiences. By writing these letters, the adults are not only experiencing a cathartic release, but they are also embarking on an inner journey of self-healing by validating and finally categorising the pain they experienced as children.
Kati said the most challenging part of the process was the feelings that were subconsciously sitting there, writing about these moments in life can bring up old wounds but was also a healing experience. Putting these stories out there for people to read is brave, it provides a feeling of strength and unity to all the authors in this beautiful anthology.
“Tapping into subconscious feelings can often be a hard process, but it is also a necessary process to heal and move forward.
“The creation of this incredible anthology was a labour of love, the authors were coached, trained, supported, and encouraged to share their stories with the world.
“These are letters written by real people that contain actual events. The letters are all beautifully, uniquely, different. When we first collated the stories into one document and I read them through, I cried.
“In fact, I bawled. Then I cried for the bravery of these remarkable authors, and how proud I am of this book, ” Kati concluded.
