LA VOIX HUMAINE (THE HUMAN VOICE) at Carriageworks was a heartbreaking experience to watch.

The play, a translation of Jean Cocteau’s classic 1930 play, tells the story of a young woman who is not able to move on after a relationship breakdown.

Along with an outstanding solo performance by Halina Reijn, the play’s set is a great highlight.

The setting,  which is implied, is the living room of a modern, high rise apartment, with a large balcony window extending all the way across.

in the intimate Carriageworks theatre we watch as a young woman  agonisingly unravels during an extended and often interrupted conversation with her ex lover.

Cocteau’s scenario brings to mind the great American writer Dorothy Parker’s classic short story THE TELEPHONE CALL.

A powerful production by the Toneelgroep Amsterdam Theatre Company, the Sydney Festival season was unfortunately too short, only playing over 4 nights between the 9th to the 13th January, 2014.
