For 2022, managing company bAKEHOUSE has put together an equally exciting program blending the best work of our most talented emerging and experienced practitioners. The year gets going in January with Panimo Pandemonium, 8 weeks of kaleidoscopic fun brought together in a KXT Takeover by Panimo Creatives, with 16 works by early emerging artists and a broad program of workshops and developments.
bAKEHOUSE Co-Artistic Director John Harrison said emerging artists were the most impacted by lockdowns and interruptions over the last two years. “It’s young graduates and theatre makers whose career progression has stalled. We’ve worked with Panimo to provide a bunch of new opportunities to showcase their work.”
Fulfilling commitments to companies programmed in 2021 means audiences will finally get to see the work of emerging companies Eye Contact Theatre (Breathing Corpses by Laura Wade), Sandpaperplane (Lilac by Jackson Used) and Akimbo & Co (Tongue Tied by Clare Hennessey and The Wasp by Morgan Lloyd Malcom). Indie mavericks Tooth and Sinew are back with an updated UBU by Richard Hilliar, transferring from the Popupstairs program in KX Hotel Bordello to the theatre, and Shopfront presents exciting new work Little Jokes in Times of War by Charlotte Salusinszky.
Completing a packed year: Tell Me Before the Sun Explodes by KXT Step Up team member Jacob Parker, directed by KXT Associate Artist Hayden Tonazzi; Daddy Developed a Pill by Cassie Hamilton, nurtured through the Laboratory, KXT’s emerging writers program led by Saro Lusty-Cavallari; and Tom at the Farm by Michel Marc Bouchard, the directing debut of KXTeethcutting founder Danny Ball. Rounding things out is For the Grace of You Go I by Alan Harris from experienced indie producers Secret House + New Ghosts Theatre and Attempts on Her Life by Martin Crimp, presented by KXT resident company Montague Basement.
KXT’s Summer Supper Club – a major investment in new writing – is programmed for January 2023, in partnership with Bontom and Periscope productions: a micro-season of 3 multi-playwright projects by 10 writers.
Even more exciting is a new partnership with emerging company kwento: supporting the staging of 2 productions: The Marriage Agency by Saman Shad (transferring from the 2021 StoryLines season); and One Hour No Oil by Kenneth Moraleda and Jordan Shea; along with a writers’ associate program, led by Shea, for emerging BIPOC practitioners – celebrating and crafting marginalised voices in theatre and performance.
KXT also continues its significant investment in Artist Support programs, with:
- a renewed Storytellers season presented by Joanna Erskine, celebrating playwrights and their work;
- School Camp, a hotbed of creativity featuring play reads, panels and artist workshops, led by Rily Spadaro;
- The Lab Report, the annual showcase of work developed through the Laboratory;
- and Legit theatre Co’s program of play reads for KXTeethcutting.
In other news: the 2021 Step Up team, KXT’s emerging artist mentoring program, extend their residency at KXT until July of 2022, to allow time for production placements and the staging of the annual Step Up festival. In 2021 KXT Assoc Artist Laneikka Denne launched the Monologue Collective, a program of mentorship for teenage writers developing monologues for teenage performers, and KXT is excited to continue its partnership with Laneikka, and support of the program in 2022.
