JEKYLL AND HYDE THE MUSICAL @ Star of the Sea Theatre MANLY

Musical version of the fictional Robert Louis Stevenson story about Doctor Henry Jekyll, who decides to use chemicals to experiment on himself, with unexpected dark results with the appearance of the sinister Mr. Edward Hyde, the evil murderous side of his inner self. The duality of Jekyll/Hyde is also shown with right handed Doctor Henry Jekyll, versus left handed Mr. Edward Hyde. Searching for a chemical cure to permanently remove Jekyll, our Hyde is happy to sacrifice everything, including Jekyll’s love for his fiancé, Emma Cardew (Rachel Hertz). Stuart Oliver has a particularly strong voice in the title role.

Music by Frank Wildhorn, book by Leslie Bricusse, and lyrics by Wildhorn, Bricusse and Steve Cuden. JEKYLL AND HYDE THE MUSICAL opened on Broadway in 1997 and ran for more than 1500 performances, and features classic ballads including “In His Eyes” and “Someone Like You”.

Frank Wildhorn and Steve Cuden’s have re-imaginined Stevenson’s fable about good and evil which lies within all of humanity. Now Doctor Henry Jekyll is an ambitious and brilliant young doctor working at St. Jude’s, an institution for the mentally ill. According to Hyde, all mental illness is the manifestation of evil. St. Jude’s patients are not ill but are under the influence of evil forces. His chemical formula, is the cure that he believes will leave only the good by removing the evil.

The Red Rat Pub scenes, and has unexpectedly different costuming, and are not quite what to might expect for a Victorian bawdy-house, but there are most certainly bawdy and lascivious fun scenes, with the women all wearing candy-stripe nurses uniforms.

This Manly Musical Society production is a beguiling, and beautifully costumed  and scintillating revival,  delivering a smorgasbord of delights with its big strong and vivid voice leads. Amazing choreography from the entire ensemble cast, with strong and assured ensemble performances and the absolute quality of the singing, and everyone always full of boundless energy and constant enthusiasm. Impeccably acted, with strong individual performances, all the songs work to move the story forward, and the entire cast are flawless in this scintillating and engrossing production.

Ranked among the creepiest of the Broadway musicals, it has one of the hardest scores to sing, and this cast excelled to provide a fast paced evening with frequent big and fun moments, so this JEKYLL AND HYDE THE MUSICAL is an absolute must see. Highly Recommended. Running time of 135 minutes plus the one interval.
