HOLLYWOOD POSTPONES ITS CINEMA AND TV AWARDS CEREMONIES

For the fourth time since the Academy Awards were inaugurated in 1929 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that’s would delay the next Oscar’s Ceremony from February 28 to April 25 because of the coronavirus.

It would appear that the Golden Globes will slot into the vacated  February 28th date.

As a result of many productions closing down the eligibility date for the rescheduled Academy Awards was extended to February 28, 2021 instead of December 13, 2020.

In.a further easing of the rules, streaming services would not have to have a cinematic release to be eligible Academy Awards.

The Academy also announced a new plan to promote nominee diversity commencing from the  2022 awards, The rules, and criteria in relation to nominee diversity have not as yet been finalised.

Meanwhile, the Creative Arts Emmys, at which the majority of Emmys are awarded annually, will be held online in September 2020.

The main Emmys telecast is scheduled for 20th September but its exact format has not yet been settled

The three past Academy Award postponements were due to a disastrous flood in Los Angeles in 1948, the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968, and the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan.

The April 25th date is the latest date in the Award’s history.

Across the Atlantic the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAS) are being postponed from February 14, 2021  to April 11, 2021.

What this means is that the cinema-going public will have to wait until January or February to see Oscar worthy films. This is due to the tact that studios usually release their hopeful movies all at once to the latest date possible under the rules so that they will be fresh in the minds of Academy voters.
