If you have faith in the goodness of man and the the nobility of the human spirit do not see this movie. If you want to see some very fine acting by Meryl Streep it is a must see.

This film is set in New York in 1944 in the lead up to Florence Foster Jenkins debut performance at Carnegie Hall. The era is quite fastidiously recreated. The clothes, the cars and the furnishings of the apartments give authenticity to a time when the tide had turned in the War and there was a sense of optimism that the Allies would prevail.Florence is a society lady who loves to sing operatic arias to her friends. She is generous to a fault with her time and money and in turn she is feted by them as as a star. Except it is obvious to everyone that she cannot sing. Her longstanding boyfriend, St Claire Bayfield (“Whitey”) is devoted to ensuring that she never finds out what their true opinion of her is. He plays a fine role in the film, pulling out all stops to keep reality away from Mrs Jenkins.

Meryl Streep plays the part of a fragile personality who at times is on the cusp of realising that she is making a fool of herself. It is a polished nuanced performance and Ms Streep carries it of with perfection.

Complete with a handsome and very much younger boyfriend her life is a total sham, but ultimately one wonders whether or not in the end, it is Florence Foster Jenkins who has the last word.
