DITCH BY BETH STEEL @ LIMELIGHT ON OXFORD

DITCH is Beth Steel’s brutal dystopian thought-provoking debut play from 2010, and now receives a splendid Australian Premiere at the boutique performance venue, Limelight on Oxford. Man-made climate apocalypse, gloom and doom as most of the United Kingdom is now underwater, together with the sheer stupidity of an impending global nuclear annihilation.

This play is a stark and lucid reminder of the possibilities, caused by any of the world’s governments failing to prevent global warming. Bleak unpleasant future, London is long gone, and Manchester’s draconian government remains strong, and Manchester Security Services are constantly sending their able-bodied men to die in Venezuela.

At a far flung outpost in The Peak District, four Manchester Security Services officers, detain illegals trying to escape to Scotland. All education stops at twelve years of age. Pregnancy is only for winners of the one in ten thousand lottery, however some humanity remains as these six workers, despite their constantly suppressed emotions, are all seeking to better their bare existence. They decide to begin growing fruit and vegetables, to supplement their canned rations.

Her security services dormitory and its  kitchen are operated by 58 year old Mrs. Peel, assisted by 20 year old Meagan. Captain Burns (50s) is in charge of three soldiers, Bug (30s) Turner (30s) James (20s). Their tiny lives are explored with great depth and with deep understanding of the terrible loss of all that was their magnificent civilisation. Providing a magnificent and very entertaining night full of unexpected deadly twists, all leading to the end of the Manchester that they all knew and loved.

Cast of six, all provide extremely memorable performances. Each well-developed and meaty role, allows these six stars to deliver dazzling depths of emotion. Recommended.
