A half truth; a vacant apology; a need for love and commitment that’s never met. DANCING DOESN’T COUNT at where we draw the line between doing right by each other and doing right by ourselves.

A new Australian play written by recent Sydney Theatre School graduate Gemma Clinch, DANCING DOESN’T COUNT follows the story of Casey and Steph – two people who were perhaps never quite right for each other. This production also explores queer narratives in ways that we don’t often see on the Australian stage.

Here’s a question for you: what's the difference between a bisexual person and a unicorn? You can see a unicorn on TV. This is something that writer Clinch wanted to share with her play, “Representation is a huge step towards acceptance. It was important to me that bisexual people were represented as fully realised, three-dimensional human beings with their own set of struggles”.

DANCING DOESN'T COUNT brings the story of two women, each with unique experiences in the world, to the forefront. It challenges our understanding of queer privilege and questions why people stay where they are unhappy.

Directing this piece is recent NIDA graduate Shannan Ely, while the characters’ intriguing intricacies are brought to life by Gemma Clinch (Casey), Eleanore Knox (Steph), and Kurt Ramjan (Alex). This story is one which the creatives are passionate about telling and can’t wait to bring to life on the Fringe stage.
