CURATORIAL+CO. SET TO UNVEIL EXPANSIVE NEW GALLERY SPACE

Online gallery and art consultancy Curatorial+Co. has today announced it will launch a new physical gallery space in Redfern, Sydney.

Launching on 14 August 2020, the new warehouse-style gallery will showcase accessible, one-of-a-kind and limited edition works by established and emerging artists and designers from around the world.

Founded in 2015 by curator Sophie Vander, Curatorial+Co. reverses the trend of art galleries moving from physical spaces into the digital having spent five years as a purely digital platform before moving to a bespoke 300-square-metre gallery space within a Redfern warehouse.

Curatorial+Co. seeks to break down the traditional stereotypes of the white cube gallery by presenting a vibrant mix of work by contemporary artists alongside contemporary design objects in a warm environment that welcomes both emerging and established collectors.

The gallery will be a meeting place to connect collectors with the artists and designers themselves. Curatorial+Co. Founder and Director Sophie Vander said, “Moving from a purely online to a physical space, whilst reversing the usual trend for galleries, feels like a natural progression for Curatorial+ Co. We have seen enormous growth in our online sales in the past five years, with many works being purchased sight unseen by buyers all over the world and a loyal base of returning collectors. With this expansive new gallery space, we hope to connect with a new range of collectors, those who prefer a more real-life gallery experience.”

The launch exhibition for Curatorial+Co.’s new gallery HERE WITH ME will feature works by more than 30 artists from Australia, USA, Canada, Russia, South Africa, Poland and Sweden – comprising 80% female artists and spanning a wide range of mediums including painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, photography, sculpture and ceramic works.

The inaugural exhibition, launching to the public on Friday 14 August, will present works by the full stable, as well as five new artists, including:

  • A large-scale two-metre mobile by artist Odette Ireland whose ceramic sculptures and mobiles celebrate the ever-changing Australian landscape.
  • A new collaboration between internationally celebrated paper sculptor Stuart McLachlan and acclaimed photographer Simon Cardwell of large-scale photographic works featuring intricate paper sculptures of deer skeletons in fantastical environments speaking to climate change, humanity and mortality.
  • New 3D printed ceramic sculptures by designer and artist Susan Chen
  • Artist Susie Dureau’s large scale sea and sky paintings, with evocative gestural strokes.
  • Mixed media works drawing on digital collage and painting by filmmaker and artist Isabelle de Kleine

Curatorial+Co.’s new gallery headquarters will be located at Studio 1, 175 Cleveland Street, Redfern NSW. The gallery will open to the public on Friday and viewing hours will be Monday to Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday by appointment.
