Like its many superheros, Marvel Entertainment is once again flying high at the box-office. The latest instalment to the 2011 Captain America: The First Avenger, THE WINTER SOLDIER is so far the highest grossing film of the year, taking in $645,359,241, $16 million alone in Australia.

Over the last few years, Marvel has been expanding its crime fighting universe with blockbusters like the Spiderman reboot series, Thor, Iron Man and the Hulk bringing them all together in The Avengers in 2012. It was the biggest money maker of that year, raking in over one billion dollars.

In their first major film directed by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, THE WINTER SOLDIER follows Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans as America’s most patriotic soldier. Surviving World War 2, he reawakens and is brought into the present day where along with the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) joins forces to uncover a conspiracy within S.H.I.E.L.D. the film’s law enforcement agency. A deadly assassin adds to the suspense: The Winter Soldier played by Sebastian Stan does not necessarily enhance the film but does however survive the sequel.

Marvel Entertainment has been working hard to revive its 80 year old brand for a new generation of fans. The Spiderman and Iron Man series was fantastic and The Avengers was also impressive. Its sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron is scheduled for release in May 2015.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER is everything you expect to see in a big budget superhero film. Stunning visual effects, big bangs and explosions and somehow the villain always survives for another big budget sequel. Unlike some superhero films, it displays the emotion and personal struggle of its hero, a man whose patriotisms and judgement is challenged. THE WINTER SOLDIER is a great sequel return for Marvel comic book diehards and moviegoers alike.
