Beyond The Neck

Anita Hegh in ‘Beyond The Neck’

With ‘his 2008 AWGIE award winning play Beyond The Neck’ Tasmanian playwright Tom Holloway tells a story that delves deep into the darkness. His play explores the darkness surrounding the 1996 Port Arthur Massacre, and is the result of extensive research.

‘Beyond The Neck’ recounts the stories of four people who, in one way or another, revisit the Massacre. Anna Housten, Lex Marinos, Jamie Croft and Anita Hegh superbly play the four different characters.

Their journeys back are retold with great sensitivity. Steve Toulmin’s haunting piano score adds to the play’s impact.

The play ends with a telling anecdote that actually took place at the Massacre. A woman comes out of the cafe where most of the massacre has taken place, with the site being like a war zone, and she is calming everyone, saying that everything will be all right.

Tom Holloway’s ‘Beyond The Neck’, directed by Iain Sinclair, played downstairs at Belvoir Street from the 7th to the 31st May.
