During October and November, The Actors College Of Theatre and Television (ACTT) is presenting six unique student productions, to elegantly showcase the talents of their graduating Advanced Diploma acting students.

Tom Basden’s play JOSEPH K, is his adaptation of Franz Kafka’s 1925 short story novel The Trial  was the second of the four plays in the season  to be performed by students at the Bondi Pavilion.

Basden’s play premiered at the Gate Theatre, Notting Hill, London in November 2010 with each of the four actors playing multiple roles.

The setting is London, and it is Joseph K’s thirtieth birthday, however the invisible bureaucracy of government has unleashed its mysterious powers on Joseph K, beginning with his unexplained notification of arrest at his apartment by two trainee government officials. Immediately his life and lifestyle begins to fall apart, sidelined at work, mobile phone account cancelled, bank accounts neutered.

Joseph K tries without success to find out why he was notified as being under arrest. More and more bizarre encounters with the bureaucratic machine and then with his solicitor, until everything comes to a grinding halt with an unexpected explanation of the crime, that he did not commit.

Sean O’Riordan helmed this ACTT production, and won great performances from the ensemble cast of twelve who had to cover, in all, some eighteen roles.

The performance was a good sign that the ACTT approach to training actors with its ‘dynamic process of learning that equips actors with a robust and logical pathway to performance’ is working extremely well.

The performance ran for a fast moving 110 minutes with one interval.

Tom Basden’s JOSEPH K played the Bondi Pavilion between the 24th and the 28th October 2015.   ACTT’s next play at the Bondi Pavilion will be the Lex Marinos directed piece ROUNDHEADS AND PEAKHEADS playing the Bondi Pavilion theatre between the 5th and 9th November 2015.
