Since 2004 Circa has been creating powerful works of circus art that blur the lines between movement, dance, theatre and circus. Under the direction of Yaron Lifschitz the dynamic trio of two male and one female acrobat use everything at their disposal – trapeze, aerial ropes, balance poles and each other’s bodies – to thrill and astound the audience.

Live violinist Rebecca Seymour plays Bach amongst a soundtrack of electronica. The three performers are perfectly in tune with each other’s bodies as the music surrounds and enfolds them and us from the very start to their final embrace.

Every sequence performed by the trio  appeared to defy the laws of gravity and anatomy and was  performed to provide the maximum dramatic impact.

A sense of deep emotional connection among the three comes across but there is also much playfulness and fun throughout the performance. In the relatively small space of the Magic Mirrors Speigeltent we see every muscle flex and every facial expression of this highly talented group.

Played on a bare stage the trio does not rely on special effects but on their own sheer power, control and timing. There is some wonderful solo work, particularly on the rope, but it is when the ensemble work together on stage with bodies contorting, winding around each other, flinging themselves & supporting each other, that the audience is well and truly won over.

A Sydney Festival event, WHAT WILL HAVE BEEN is playing at the Magic Mirrors Spiegeltent until the 15th January.
