Sydney Philharmonia Choirs launches into 2018 with a stunning international collaboration, bringing their acclaimed young adult choir, VOX, together with one of the most awarded youth choirs in history, Estonia’s E STuudio, in their premiere Australian performance.

Sydney Philharmonia Choirs presents VOX + E STuudio Youth Choir, VOYAGE OF VOICES for two  concerts only, Saturday February 24 (Christ Church St Laurence, Sydney) and Sunday February 25 ( St Patrick’s Cathedral, Parramatta).

The 44 brilliant choristers of E STuudio Youth Choir hail from the country’s universities and high schools and have become internationally renowned for their dynamic performances of contemporary choral music from Estonia and beyond – in particular, the works of iconic Estonian composer Arvo Pärt.

Since forming in 2012 the group has won multiple international competitions and performed extensively across Europe and North America, including at New York’s Carnegie Hall. They were one of four choirs selected from around the world to perform in the 2015 New York Choral Festival.

Their Sydney performance, VOYAGE OF VOICES, presented in collaboration with Sydney Philharmonia Choirs’ VOX, marks their premiere Australian performance.

For their Australian debut, E STuudio will showcase their internationally acclaimed dynamic style of acapella performance, presenting a diverse representation of choral music from the Balkans and beyond. Their program will include works by some of Estonia’s leading music luminaries: Arvo Pärt, Tõnu Korvits, Part Uusberg and Veljo Tormis; alongside pieces by Norway’s Ola Gjeilo
and American Eric Whitacre.

For VOX, this is an opportunity to highlight the rich offerings of Australia’s choral composers, with a program of evocative works inspired by Australia’s unique environment and culture: Matthew Orlovich’s Butterflies Dance , Paul Stanhope’s Ban. Garay , Ross Edwards’ Mountain Chant , Luke Byrne’s Desert Sea , Dan Walker’s Midwinter and Ruth McCall’s fresh interpretation and arrangement of Waltzing Matilda .

The finale of the concert, co-conducted by VOX Music Director Elizabeth Scott and E STuudio’s Külli Lokko, sees the two choirs come together on stage, in an inspired and uplifting celebration of the power and beauty of acappella choral music.
