THE TYPISTS @ Exchange Hotel BALMAIN

2015_typist048

THE TYPISTS reminded me of the ultimate absurdist comedy, Samuel Beckett’s WAITING FOR GODOT.

A sparkling two character piece in one act, THE TYPISTS tells of the perils of one business day in an office.

This fresh version has two perfectly cast female roles, played by Goldele Rayment (Sylvia) and Jena Prince (Paula), working in dead-end-jobs who are paid to work endlessly repeating the same task, and achieving nothing.

Like GODOT this play has many possible psychoanalytical, religious, social and political interpretations. Wonderful vaudeville aspects and meaningless existential ritualistic elements abound. It amounts to a cautionary tale about living wasted lives.

Sylvia Payton lives with her widowed mother, is the “supervisor” telling her story from the viewpoint of a bitterly single shopaholic, who dreams of marriage with the perfect woman.

Paula is being trained on this, her first day at the office, and talks about her wife and her children, attending night school to become a lawyer

Every mundane thing that Sylvia and Paula  have ever done is talked over endlessly.

Running time 65 minutes.

A Company of Rogues production, THE TYPISTS is playing the Exchange Hotel, 94 Beattie Street, Balmain,  until the 24th July. For more information visit:- http://companyrogues.com/
