Students works come to life @ ARTEXPRESS 2015

The Art Gallery of New South Wales is presenting ARTEXPRESS 2015- between the 12th February and the 19th April- bringing together a selection of artworks produced by student artists in NSW. This year there are 37 students represented at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the principal venue for ARTEXPRESS.

Drawn from the most outstanding works submitted for the 2014 NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) Visual Arts examination, ARTEXPRESS provides insights into students’ creativity and the issues and ideas that are important to them.

The 37 works being exhibited at the Gallery were selected from almost 10,000 students who completed the HSC Visual Arts examination in 2014 in NSW.

Presenting the independent voice of young people, ARTEXPRESS showcases a wonderful range of creativity in diverse media including painting, drawing, photomedia, printmaking, textiles, ceramics, graphic design, time-based forms and sculpture.

The Art Gallery of New South Wales provides students with the opportunity for their work to be exhibited to a large and diverse audience.

The Gallery’s coordinator of secondary education programs, Leeanne Carr said: ‘We are delighted to present ARTEXPRESS 2015, which is a major highlight of our annual exhibition calendar and an opportunity to celebrate outstanding student talent.

‘Students are continuously intrigued by the world around them and in the Visual Arts classroom they are encouraged to be inquisitive in a creative and sensitive way. The exceptional artworks included in the exhibition draw inspiration from the environment, their personal world, social issues, the imagination and art history,’ said Carr.

For the first time, the Gallery will collaborate with Google to publish 360-degree imagery of this year’s exhibition online, featuring commentary from a selection of young artists about their artworks.

Google will combine the 360-degree imagery and audio to create Story Spheres, a new technology that allows students and art lovers to virtually explore the Gallery online from anywhere in the world. Story Spheres will be accessible through the Gallery website and Google Cardboard.

ARTEXPRESS is a joint initiative of the NSW Department of Education and Communities and the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards NSW in association with the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the principal venue.
