Funk Engine Coming To The Foundry 616

Siebe Pogson

After a successful CD launch last year, Siebe Pogson and his band Funk Engine are back at Foundry 616 on the 11th of March, 2015. Pogson recently returned from a five week trip to the USA, a month of which was spent in New Orleans Louisiana, a place which many consider to be the home of jazz and funk. “Hearing the roots of the music you love is really inspiring for a composer,” Siebe commented. “Before all the music starts – and it doesn’t start till late in New Orleans – I’d often reflect on what I heard the night before and write something similar: anything from a bass line to a melody. As well as jazz, New Orleans has everything. Cajun music (Zydeco), rock, funk, blues, and soul it’s all there.  I learned SO much!”

New Orleans has produced some of the greatest jazz players of the 20th and 21st Century including the likes of Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bichet, and traditional jazz advocates such as Wynton and Bradford Marsalis. In terms of New Orleans funk, artists such as Jon Cleary, The Funky Meters and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band reign supreme. He even had a beer with legendary guitarist funk guitarist, Big D!

This time around at Foundry Funk Engine will introduce some New Orleans inspired music Pogson wrote while he was away. The usual Funk Engine line up of Nish Manjunath, (tenor saxophone) Felix Lalanne, (electric guitar) Holly Conner, (drums) and Siebe Pogson (electric bass) will be playing their inspired mix of jazz, funk and reggae inspired originals. So far this year, Funk Engine has played to an enthusiastic audience at Mr. Falcon’s in Glebe and in the past the have played at Hermann’s Bar, The Town Hall hotel in Newtown, Marrickville Bowling Club and the Beat Music festival at Peats ridge in 2013. Last year they held a residency at Lazybones Lounge Marrickville.
