SHORT+ SWEET 2017 TOP 80 : WEEK TWO @ THE DEPOT THEATRE

 

Short and Sweet Theatre Sydney is the largest festival of ten minute plays in the world. Now in its 16th year, the festival takes place over a period of three months starting in January each year. Around 160 brand new scripts by Australian and international writers, will be performed during the festival. Spoilt for choice, with nine brand new plays this week:-

1 – T3 Trojan

ITC presented by Bare Bones Theatre Co.

Written and Directed by Judith Duncan

Cast: Karishma Mathur

Very entertaining, dramatic injustice monologue of woman versus machine, with essential content very reminiscent of “Fahrenheit 451” and “Divergent”. The human element has been removed, dystopian justice is now very blind, a computer is your judge jury and executioner, because all justice is badly administered by artificial intelligence, with urgent need for change.

2 – The Supermarket

ITC presented by Bucking Broncos

Written by Chris Naylor / Directed by Liam Smith

Cast: Sally Williams and Haki Crisden

Text intensive comedy delight with a wonderful cast. On the road to divorce, and quite a twist with the wife no longer listening to her husband. Confessions of a long-suffering shopaphobic husband, who has a shopaholic wife.

3 – The Black Out

Written and Directed by Robyn Karakasch

Cast:Jock Bidwell, Thomas-Andrew Baxter, Sue Bidwell, Fran Bosly-Craft

Radio show director and his three actors, rehearse the latest version of their epic mystery radio show for FM495, with the entire audience supplying all the sound effects.

4 – It’s A Tragedy

By Steven Otfinoski / Directed by Mandy Sugar

Cast: Ayeshah Rose and James Sugrue

Will Shakespeare arrives in current day USA to meet with her new American producer of HAMLET. Her producer details all the required “interesting” re-writes that he requires of everything ever written by his new playwright in residence, Will Shakespeare. Huge audience pleaser with the timeline/gender changes, dramatically turning tragedy into a travesty, a comedy delight, fresh from Stratford-On-Arvon.

5 – Forgotten

By Isaac Owen / Directed by Ruth Fingret

Cast: Kaitlin de Lacy, Colleen Henry, Ray Coyne, Uma Kali Shakti and Mel Ryan

Crash Test Drama winner, expertly directed farcical comedy of errors from the huge cast, madness, kidnapping, dementia, split-personality disorder ahoy.

6 – Neptunes

By Liam Burke / Directed by Renee Lim

Cast: Jodie Dal Bon, Constance Khoo, Brigid O’Sullivan, Eveline Schubert and  Alexandra Stamell

2017 investigating the international sex slave trade, backstage at the infamous Neptune’s Lounge strip club in Kings Cross with a troupe of prostitutes, the arrival of Lizzy the Police Detective, all their horrendous sexual assault stories are intimately revealed.

7 – Dress Ups

ITC presented by Grinning Sharks Productions

Written and Directed by Graham Yates

Cast: Garreth Cruikshank

The games people play with their lives, as the mask gradually fades away, the terror within is revealed.

8 – Answer My Prayer

ITC presented by Active Theatre Productions

By Allan West / Directed by Richard Cotter

Cast: Steven Burns, Philip D’Ambrosio, Simon Doctor, Sarah Plummer, Alexandra Camp Martinez and Josiah Van Stolk

This dramedy message piece with a cast of six, constantly garnered the small sounds of strange murmuring and twittering, from the opening night audience. Catholics constantly knelt and asked for God’s help, and then their acceptance of not quite getting exactly what they asked for.

9 – George Brown Steps Out

By Gerry Greenland / Directed by Sonia Bible

Cast: Rob White and Graham Yates

George Brown has been kidnapped for ransom, and expects to die as he knows of no-one willing to pay the ransom. Superbly chosen cast, with Graham Yates delivering to the appreciative audience, yet another awesome comedy experience.
