What have they done? Cameron Diaz as Annie and Jason Segel as Jay in SEX TAPE

Annie and Jay are a happy middle class family, with two kids, a big house and are so nice that they give away free iPads to friends and mailmen. And Annie is about to sell her motherhood blog. All is sweet, apart from a lack of sex which is a crime and a terrible affliction affecting so many first world happy families

What do they do? Make a sex tape! This has helped with the careers of so many untalented celebrities. (I’m wondering why wasn’t there a Kim Kardashian cameo?! I guess we’ve seen enough of her already).

Of course the tapes gets out…well almost…a whole four of them are out there. Mysterious texts set them off, so they head out into the night to track down the copies, but still the texts come.

I would like to call this an uproariously funny rom-com but I can’t. Good laughs can paper over big plot holes, which this film tries to do, however too many gags fall into ravines the size of the Grand Canyon.

The dog chase inside Hank’s (Rob Lowe) mansion was hilarious and Lowe now has a new career as ‘quirky-funny cameo-man’ but so many laughs go missing in action.

I haven’t seen so many bad edits in a film, and the comic timing is way out. Even Jack Black can’t make some of this material work. Still Cameron Diaz has a winning smile which can overcome her dramatic limitations, and Jason Segel works hard.

The couple who play their friends, Rob Corddry and Ellie Kemper, try hard, but don’t work. Their contribution feels more like an intervention: unwelcome, intrusive and they add little. Still there are enough moments of hilarity to make this enjoyable if you feel like putting your brain in formaldehyde but can’t find a jar or you can’t wait until this a dollar weekly dvd. Two bare bottom cheeks.
