John Turtletaub helmer of the National Treasure series and Dan Fogelman who wrote Crazy Stupid Love have teamed to present a comedy of the aged

Four academy award winning actors make a silk purse out of a sows ear in LAST VEGAS. Michael Douglas is getting married to a woman half his age and three of his old pals book into Las Vegas for a bucks night.

Two are happy to be there – still married Kevin Kline and divorced Morgan Freeman – but widower Bobby de Niro is less than delighted to be part of the party, nursing a grudge, a perceived slight that has festered since his wife died.

LAST VEGAS plays like a geriatric THE HANGOVER, but the gross out is suppressed by the class of the cast. And it’s not just the boys. Academy award winner Mary Steenbergen lifts the bar even higher as the woman that adds fuel to the feud between Douglas and De Niro, both vying for her considerable charms.

Shooting craps is tough when you’re constipated, winning piles can be taken in different ways, being hip takes on new meaning and the pill of choice is Viagra not Qualude.

The script is not without its surprises, little plot twists and a tincture of pathos, but it’s the cast that raise this bottle of bubbly to champagne class. Just like De Niro’s other feature on show at the moment, GRUDGE MATCH, this is comfy cardigan and popcorn territory who’d rather see OAP than CGI.
