Jurassic World

It has been 22 years since the epic blockbuster of Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park leaped onto the screen, breaking box-office records and at the time, becoming the highest-grossing film ever. The 14 year intermission between Jurassic Park 3 and the latest instalment Jurassic World was worth the wait.

The film’s incredible scenery and locations was breathtaking to watch, especially in its premiere screening on the big IMAX 3D screen at the Melbourne Museum. Audience members were treated to a tour of the Dinosaur Walk Exhibition, showcasing dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals through skeleton replicas, models, interactive displays and imagery.

Directed and co-written by Colin Trevorrow, who is relatively new to Hollywood and director of the critically acclaimed low budget 2012 film Safety Not Guaranteed, JURASSIC WORLD begins with two brothers, Zach (Nick Robinson) and Gray (Ty Simpkins), who are about to embark on a holiday trip that they will never forget at the dinosaur theme park island known as Jurassic World.

Bryce Dallas Howard plays the boys’ estranged aunt, Claire and the operations manager of Jurassic World. Upon their arrival, it is revealed that she is trying to come up with another exhibit that will attract more visitors to the island: A giant, scary genetically modified hybrid dinosaur, named Indominus Rex.

Vincent d’Onofrio plays Hoskins, the island’s corrupt head of security, who mainly sees the new hybrid dinosaur as a weapon in modern warfare. Chris Pratt plays Owen Grady, the dinosaur trainer, and hero of the film. He is the only employee on the island to see, relate to and fully understand the emotions of the prehistoric creatures.

All hell breaks loose when the hybrid escapes from its isolation and begins a deadly rampage, attacking the island’s visitors and fellow creatures, and causing chaos. In true Hollywood style, it’s up to Owen, Claire and the brothers to save the day and stop the monstrous dinosaur before it can cause more damage.

JURASSIC WORLD is an excellent instalment in the franchise. It’s a fantasy action film that doesn’t go too over the top with CGI and special effects, which was unfortunately the case with the two previous films.

The film is visually dazzling, filled with thrills and suspense and in its own right, serves as an entertaining and worthy sequel to Spielberg’s original 1993 Jurassic Park film.

JURASSIC WORLD is now screening in cinemas.
