Once a month, HIJINKS takes over Sea Life Sydney Aquarium for a kids-free over 18 years old evening of music, games, crafts, comedy and sharks. People journey for 90 minutes or longer through this underwater city of dive bars, music, fascinating sea creatures, plus educational material.
Dressing up is encouraged and in mid December, a throng of 1980s fleuro dressed punters sauntered into the Aquarium and strolled among sharks, stingrays, dugongs, fish, penguins, seahorses and sea jellies.
Improv comedians and other emerging local artists ensure that all are made to feel welcome. Interaction with others is facilitated by linking with others with the same colour entrance bands. For those seeking company, there are blind date tickets available. All rapidly join in the good humour and participate in simple activities with prizes involving things marine and chocolate.
In the past HIJINKS visitors were invited to take part in a number of other interactive activities including a ukulele session, a nautical tattoo illustration workshop, a mermaid and merman life drawing sketch class and hilarious Talk like a Pirate lessons.
HIJINKS is coordinated by The Festivalists, the team behind Jurassic Lounge, Mayhem, Sydney Film Festival Hub and the Possible Worlds Film Festival.
“While exploring, guests can grab a drink at the pop up bars serving Little Creatures beers or Stoli Vodka cocktails, take selfies with Grey Nurse sharks, chat with marine biologists or simply get a head start on the weekend,” explains The Festivalists director Mathieu Ravier.
“Sea Life Sydney Aquarium is one of Sydney’s most surprising, awe-inspiring sites. HIJINKS is a unique opportunity for local residents to reclaim the aquarium as their own over the course of a wild and eventful evening.”
Best of all it is just so much fun and on the night in December visitors in their twenties had just as much fun as those in their fifties.
