Experience London as it was in Haydn’s day when you hear our first program in 2018.”  Skye McIntosh – Artistic Director, Australian Haydn Ensemble

Haydn was a respected celebrity by the time he made his way to London in 1795. To celebrate his influence on the city’s musical life, the Australian Haydn Ensemble launch 2018 with this all-Haydn program, HAYDN & LONDON.

The season opens with Haydn’s beautiful London flute trio, and concludes with his famous London Symphony arranged for chamber ensemble by his dear friend, Johann Salomon. Salomon, concertmaster in Haydn’s orchestra throughout the 1770s, was a key figure in the 18th century music scene. He was also one of the few permitted by the composer to arrange his music.

The program also features his enthralling String Quartet Op. 74 No. 3, The Rider. This work was written for his friend Count Apponyi of Vienna, but was premiered in London at the Hanover Square Rooms’ concerts with Salomon leading the quartet.
