Moonshot Games is taking over the Old 505 Theatre to run a five day mini-festival that blurs the lines between theatre and gaming: transforming audiences from passive spectators into engaged players, and transforming the space into a haven that celebrates gamers, lovers of games and fans of interactivity in all its forms.
Each day the space will be open from noon to midnight and will feature a packed program of events: drop-in gaming sessions, lectures by industry luminaries and commentators, tutorial roleplaying games, large-scale immersive social games, plus Mario Kart all day every day.
The festival will explore all facets of “gaming” – from live gaming, roleplaying and board games through to interactive theatre. A whole day is being set aside to run Room Escapes and they’re determined to make Dungeons & Dragons cool again; if Vin Diesel plays it, how bad can it be?
They’re spending a week creating a haven for a form that’s at the centre of a cultural moment, where a sense of community is fostered for hardcore gamers and intrigued newbies alike. They’re devoted to creating a safe space for diverse audiences to enjoy a hobby that’s traditionally been the domain of male geekdom. A place where stories and experiences aren’t something foisted upon you, but something you take an active part in creating.
The daytime sessions will be free, with a drop-in drop-out approach, while the feature evening events will be ticketed, and passes are on sale permitting unlimited access to all the festival’s events.
Ultimately, this festival is about community, collaboration and bringing like-minded people together. Moonshot are looking to create a welcoming, non-threatening space for people to experience and try out new ideas and to learn more about gaming in all its various forms.
