12th LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL @ DENDY OPERA QUAYS

Only a limited window of an extended long weekend opens for the 12th Latin American Film Festival, but it’s chock full of films you may not see otherwise.

A highlight is the Ricardo Darin starrer, KOBLIC, about an ex Argentinian top gun who rebels at his government’s policy of taking political dissidents up in his aircraft and jettisoning them sans parachute.

A study in abusive political power and the power of an individual to to oppose, KOBLIC is a suspenser full of intrigue, subterfuge and romance.

Ricardo Darin, staggeringly, staggeringly suave in his aviator shades gives Tom Cruise a run for his Top Gun crown -an interesting compare and contrast exercise with Cruise’s latest cinema release, American Made.

The other side of the spectrum is EVERYTHING ELSE, a slow as paint drying
examination of solitude starring Oscar nominee Adriana Barraza (Babel, Amores Perros) as a reclusive bureaucrat spending her days being a belligerent bureaucrat and her nights watching romance films with her beloved cat Manuelito. The tone here is perfect to show that when we are relegated to unswerving rules and regulations humanity is reduced.

Fifty percent of this year’s program comprises of female directors, and showcases who we are as a whole continent, with representation from Central and South America, and a special Caribbean spotlight.

The program highlights the wonderful kaleidoscope that is the Latin world, bringing films from Cuba, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic to Sydney

The 12th Sydney Latin American Film Festival will take place at Dendy Opera Quays cinemas from Thursday 7 September – Monday 11 September 2017 and Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre on Sunday 24 September, screening the very best in award-winning Latin American cinema.
